NEPHROLOGY/ DIALYSIS NURSE [Nigeria]


 

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The nephrology/ dialysis nurses will be responsible for overseeing dialysis treatments required by patients suffering from acute or chronic kidney failure. Check and record patients’ vitals, ensure that dialysis machines are set up correctly, and teach patients how to operate home dialysis machines. Evaluating patients’ lab results, and answering patients’ questions regarding dialysis treatments. Coordinate and provide nursing care for patients by working cooperatively with other team members.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

· Review physician orders for dialysis patients

· Collect pre-treatment dialysis data and review records prior to dialysis

· Overseeing dialysis treatment for patients undergoing dialysis

· Checking and recording vital signs before, during and after dialysis

· Monitoring patients during dialysis and notifying the physician in cases of adverse reactions

· Work with dialysis technicians to ensure that dialysis machines and equipment are set up correctly.

· Preparing and updating nursing care plans.

· Teaching patients and their family members how to operate home dialysis machines should they decide on home dialysis therapy where necessary.

· Educating patients on dialysis treatment options, kidney disease management

· Administering medication and providing support and encouragement to patients who are apprehensive.

· Conveying patient-specific information to the nephrologist, dialysis technicians, and other health care providers.

· Informing patients about their condition, treatment schedule, dietary restrictions, and any other relevant information that would affect the outcome of their care where necessary

· Overseeing all activities related to equipment maintenance, cleanliness, and sterilization.

· Assisting in administrative functions related to maintaining accurate records on patient profiles, treatments given, equipment used, and supplies needed

· Monitoring progress towards established goals for patients on chronic dialysis and modifying treatment regimens to meet patient needs.

· Post-dialysis care, which may include educating patients and their families about how to manage and perform dialysis at home, including medications, proper nutrition, lifestyle changes, and monitoring compliance with the treatment plan

· Conducts pre-dialysis patient assessment including obtaining patient vital signs and assessing the patient's vascular access, laboratory findings, and the patient's general health.

· Verifies that patients are taking all prescribed medications

· You will be open to learning and improving your knowledge by taking relevant courses and going for updates

· You will do general and other nursing duties when not being utilized in the dialysis unit

· Perform any other task that may be assigned to you from time to time.

HIERARCHY

This role reports to the Head of the Project (The Consultant Nephrologist)

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

· RN - dialysis

· Bachelors of Nursing Science is added advantage

· Valid Licence – Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria

· NYSC Certificate or Exemption Letter ( where applicable)

PROFILE REQUIREMENTS

· Proven experience working as a dialysis nurse.

· Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.

· Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and observation skills.

· The ability to operate dialysis machines.

· The ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

· Patient and compassionate.

· Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills

· Able to work efficiently under time constraints

· Highly motivated team player willing to go the extra mile

· Basic computer skills and proficiency in MS Excel and Word
